
Neurosurgeon
Dr Sylvia Shitsama is a Neurosurgeon and a thought leader in Professional health workforce and a champion for Policy reforms.
She is a consultant neurosurgeon and a lecturer at the Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), school of medicine in Kenya, with a passion for brain and spine health, medical education, mentorship and research.
She undertook a Clinical and Research Fellowship in General Neurosurgery in 2019 at the University of Toronto, Canada and has also been recognized twice as a top 40 under 40 women for being the first qualified female neurosurgeon in Kenya.
She brings together the precision of neurosurgical training with a deep passion and expertise in medical education, creating a truly unique blend of skill and dedication.

Hydrocephalus Society
She currently serves as a board member of Hydrocephalus society and committee member Global Surgery an affiliate of Surgical Society of Kenya.
2021

Neurosurgery Award
She recently received the inaugural Congress of Neurological Surgeons foundation future women leaders in neurosurgery award (2021) by the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), USA.

ATLS Trainer
Dr Shitsama is also a certified ATLS trainer (Advanced Trauma Life Support) and team lead for the TEAMS course held annually for the final year medical students at the JKUAT school of medicine ; Kenya is only one of 5 African countries with formal trauma training.

WFNS
She served as a committee member in the women in neurosurgery committee of the World Federation of Neurological Surgeons (WFNS) 2021-2023 and as a board member of the Kenya Medical Association (KMA) Savings Co-operative Sacco board (2015-2019)

Kenya Association of Women Surgeons
As a neurosurgery representative on Kenya association of Women Surgeons, she has organized and fundraised for approximately 60 medical students keen on pursuing surgery to attend various surgical workshops annually.
